From the Water Works Series, copyright of Larry Vogel

commercial real estate investment company in Ontario California recently purchased nine photographs by Larry Vogel. The artwork by Vogel was purchased and commissioned through the Susan Spiritus Gallery in Newport Beach, California.

All of the art pictured in the installation photographs were created and installed by Larry Vogel. All nine pieces are inkjet printed on canvas and mounted on stretcher bars. To finish the sides of the 1 1/2″ canvas wrapped stretcher bars, Vogel framed the art with an aluminum molding. The three pieces in the two story lobby are all ten feet wide and vary in height with dimensions of 38″, 32″ and 24″. The horizontal image, Yellow Leaves on Water is 38″ x 72″. All other square images are printed to 38″ x 38″.

The three images on the two story lobby wall, as well as two of the square images are from The Water Works Series all created by Vogel from digital photographs and Photoshop manipulations. The triptych of eucalyptus trees are from the Motion Picture Series. This series was created from photographs all shot from a moving car. Using long shutter speeds and a panning motion with the camera there is evidence of blur and motion in each image.

In Passing, Second Edition, by Douglas Stockdale, Blurb publication, 2008

Yes, yours truely, the editor of this web-journal and a member of The Photographers Exchange, has just published the Second Edition of my book, In Passing.

The second edition is now available as a hardcover book with an ImageWrap cover, in a large horizontal format book (13 x 11″), with 36 photographs on 80 pages of the new Blurb premium 100 lb luster paper. My earlier First Edition published a smaller, softcover book is now out of print and no longer available for purchase.

The reduction in the number of photographs in this book coinsides with a better understanding of my objectives with this series. I am attempting to capture the elusive traces of emotions of a personal tragedy, including grief, sorrow and eventually acceptance with the passage of time.

I have published a number of articles about my development of this series over the last year and a half on my personal web journal, Singular Images.

12-28-08 update: I just made a couple of tweaks to the second edition and the slightly revised Second Edition is now available.

New Epson printers – Pro 7900 & Pro 9900

Posted in Photography by douglaspstockdale on November 13, 2008

Epson just announced two new printers, the Pro 7900 (24″ wide) and 9900 (44″ wide) and they both have the ability to automaticly switch between matte black and gloss black. I figured that they did get it, but I guess it has taken a little while to implement the changes. And maybe losing some unneccessary market share to HP and Canon during the duration, eh?

Who says competition is not good! I know that the new Pro 9900 now has my interest;- )

Apparently Epson is also announcing an upgrade to their pigment ink, called UltraChrome HDR Technology. I do not have any details on the ink at the moment, but like all new things, it is suppose to be improved and better. I am sure we will see more about both of these changes in print soon.

But alas, the ability to change the black ink on the fly for the smaller prints, such as the 4880, is not available. YET! I am guessing we should see that printing capability soon, along with the availablity of the new inks on the smaller format printers.

Leica S2

Posted in Photography by douglaspstockdale on November 9, 2008

With all of the buzz about the new 21Mp Canon EOS 5D Mark II and 15MP 50D, as well as the 12 Mp Nikons, I don’t see much about the new 37.5 Mp Leica S2. The Leica is equivalent to a medium format camera (30x45mm sensor) in a 35mm camera body. But this Leica will also require some new lens for adaquate sensor coverage.

Some have voiced the concern that with the 21Mp Canon’s, they are reaching the limits with the 35mm equivalent size sensor. Cramming a lot in a small space. So is the Leica S2 the camera of the future for digital? Thus, will the current “full frame” lens for the Canon 5D Mark II or the 1DsMark III  then have a equivalency factor when used on the larger format sensor cameras??

Time will tell, eh?

The 23 Sandy Gallery, Portland, OR has just announced an interesting call for entries, which is a juried exhibit of self published print on demand (POD) books, with more details available here.

Having developed four print on demand books recently, I think that this exhibition is a wonderful idea.  It is a great opportunity to motivate the many photographers who have been thinking about developing a photographic POD book, to get it done!
