Critical Mass update
Urban ReDevelopment #10, 2008 copyright of Douglas Stockdale
PhotoLucdia has completed the first of the two phases of their judging for Critical Mass 2008. The 180 photographers who were accepted at this phase of the process, will now have their (10) photographs submitted to approximatly 200 additional jurist for the final selection.
Which takes me to the bad news/good news segment of this story.
Digital Black & White Photographs
Gisele, 1999 copyright of Patrick Demarchelier
One of the benefits of writing about photographs for this web-journal or The Photo Exhibit, I do receive a lot of digital photographs, usually low resolution (72dpi) JPEGs. Nevertheless, these digital JPEG files contain all of the relevant technical photographic information, such as the hue, saturation and tonality.
What I have noticed in many of the photographs that I receive, is the limited use of absolute blacks in photographs, especially in Black & White photographs.

Palm Springs Photo Festival
I just received notification about the Palm Springs Photo Festival dates; March 29 – April 3rd in Palm Springs, CA. Registration opens November 1st, 2008 and some workshops sold out quickly last year.
Last year I participated in the Portfolio Reviews and it was a good opportunity to have my work seen by a wide range of reviewers, even if it is for 20 minutes. It was the start of some on-going conversations.
Likewise, a small group of us from The Photo Exchange attended one of the evening seminars, which was a very interesting & antimated discussion.

Art Calendar – Another resource
Since I have been adding some new Resources to the sidebar for Exhibition/Artist calls, I have just added the Art Calendar magazine link. On their web site, they have a section called “Calls to“, which includes sections for juried exhibitions (in general, not specific to photography), with a break out between the exhibits you need to pay a fee and those which you don’t. In the section for the non-fee, there is also a listing of galleries who are open to submissions.
For galleries that are open for submission, probably a good idea to read a current article in Art Calender; Vanity Galleries: Pay to Play at Your Own Risk.
Best regards, Doug Stockdale
P.S. thanks to Miguel Garcia-Guzman for pointing to this article out on his blog, Exposure Compensation.
ArtSlant – Call for Artists
Well, ArtSlant itself is not calling for artist, but it is another resource for artists who are looking for juried art venues and other exhibiting opportunities. I have linked the LA page, but you can also find a SF, NYC, Chicago, Paris and other hot locations as well.
The ArtSlant call for artists is not specfic to photography, but relavent to artists of all mediums, so if you are looking for a photographic juried opportunity, you will need to carefully read the fine print;- )
A lot of information to check out!
Best regards, Doug Stockdale
Call for California Artists – Dia de los Muertos
The 2nd City Council Art Gallery is honored to participate in a traditional neighborhood celebration of Dia de los Muertos. Each year, our neighbors’ apartment complex and courtyard becomes a magical place where altars, candlelight, marigolds, Aztec dancing and live music fill the air. The gallery hosts an exhibition and our garden is transformed with calacas, an art workshop and delicious food. Our two spaces are joined by gates that open wide to encourage an exchange of culture, art, tradition and friendship. Please join us in this joyous celebration.

All work submitted for consideration must be available for exhibition November 1 – December 4, 2008

Call for Women artist – Women Artist On Immigration
Juror – Alma Ruiz
The Women’s Caucus for Art along with the Korean Cultural Center is seeking to to engage all women artists in California on the important topic of immigration. Each subtopic – Crossing Borders, Confronting Barriers, Bridging Identities - offers useful starting points for selecting or creating work for this show. Like the many current and prior related exhibitions on this subject, this show seeks to inspire an ongoing conversation and examination of the formation of our cultural, personal and political identities.
